Morning Tales: The Tale of Midtown’s Original Pancake House

The Original Pancake House was founded in 1953 in Portland Oregon by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke. Drawing upon their many years of experience in the culinary field and their comprehensive working knowledge of authentic national and ethnic pancake recipes, they were able to offer the unique and original menu we see today. Unusual items like their Bacon Pancakes are the items that draw in so much business.

The Original Pancake House has gotten national acclaim and remains unchanged to this day. The Midtown location of The Original Pancake House has won several awards as well! Charlotte’s BOB Awards, Charlotte Creative Loafing,  Rated Best Charlotte, and Zagat have given awards to The Original Pancake House too.

The Recipe

The Original Pancake House is a second and third generation family business, which takes great pride in maintaining the high standards that make their food so flawlessly delicious. Their pancake recipes use only the finest ingredients. The batter uses 93 score butter, pure whipping cream, fresh Grade AA eggs, hardwheat unbleached flour, and sourdough yeast. Old-fashioned sourdough yeast, just like your great grandmother used to use, is made with yeast grown in the Pancake House’s own kitchen. They begin using a culture of potatoes, flour, sugar, and activate it with a “start of yeast.” This sourdough yeast produces light, airy, fine-textured pancakes that melt right in your mouth. If you’re wondering what to order try on of their signature dishes to try are the Apple Pancakes and the Dutch Baby!

In addition to pancakes, they also serve waffles, crepes, and all sorts of breakfast foods. If you’re not into sweet breakfasts or you’re going there in the afternoon, try their omelette or Philly cheese steak! They also blend, roast and grind Original Pancake House Coffee. So pair your brunch with a french press premium coffee!
