Autism Aware Fare: Today Charlotte Dines For Awareness

Dine in or order “to go” at any participating restaurants in Charlotte for the 2017 Annual Autism Fare today Tuesday, April 25th!

Today when you order at select restaurants in Charlotte and the surrounding areas a percentage of the proceeds will go to Autism Society of North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County chapter (ASNC-MCC). As the single largest fundraising project for the chapter, the Autism Aware Fare is crucially important to the mission of ASNC-MCC and their ability to impact the lives of those in our area touched by autism.

What is Autism?

“Autism, ASD, is a puzzling neurological disorder for which there is no known cure. Autism affects language and communication in ways such as delayed language, pronunciation difficulties, and understanding how to use language to interact. Frequently these difficulties require years of speech therapy or prevent any language development at all.

Along with language, it affects social skills. Those with autism have extreme difficulty understanding or recognizing feelings of others, empathizing, and following social rules and the subtleties of social interactions.

Autism causes resistance to change. Transitions and generally anything unexpected are difficult obstacles in daily living.

Being a neurological disorder, the nervous systems of those with autism are easily over stimulated by sights, smells, sounds, and anything unexpected in public which produces inappropriate behavior and/or exaggerated responses. Sometimes people with autism calm themselves with a “stim” or stimulation such as spinning themselves or an object, waving their arms, stroking or holding a familiar object, or reading or talking about a subject of interest.”

What else does ASNC-MCC?

Spreading awareness is a key part of creating a society that both understands and supports Autism. ASNC-MCC does tons of outreach work to keep the community engaged in Autism, including sending out a newsletter every month on the latest Autism news. They also link parents of children with Autism to Autism research that they can be a part of.

ASNC-MCC believes that a teacher is the strongest link for children with Autism to a brighter future.  The Autism Society provides grants to teachers each year, provides scholarships for teacher’s aides to be trained about autism and has purchased over 20 iPads for use in the self-contained autism classrooms.
