What you and your Business Needs to Know About the Mecklenburg County Manager Reveals FY18 Budget & Capital Improvement Plan


County Manager Dena R. Diorio presented two budget plans for the Mecklenburg Board of County Comissioners consideration:

  1. A FY2018 $1.7-billion Operating Budget that maintains the current tax rate of 81.57 cents and lowers the debt service fund from 20 cents to 19.5 cents
  2. A FY2019-FY2023 $1.6 billion Capital Improvement Plan.

Diorio presented this budget keeping in mind our growing county and the needs that need to be met for it to prosper. “Mecklenburg County continues to experience significant growth in its population,” County Manager Diorio said. “It is imperative that we manage this growth through the provision of the necessary infrastructure the community deserves today, and in years to come.”

The Capital Improvement Plan (FY2019-FY2023)

“This plan will meet the infrastructure needs required to accommodate the growth in our community, ” says Diorio. The Capital Improvement Plan invests in County-owned facilities and assets, school facilities, community college facilities and libraries. It includes a total of 62 projects classified in five categories.

  1. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools — $936.9 million
    • 29 projects: 10 New Schools and 12 High-Priority School Renovations
  2. Government Facilities — $170.8 million
    • 14 projects: New Community Resource Centers, Government District Renovations
  3. Park and Recreation — $277.0 million
    • 15 projects
  4. Central Piedmont Community College — $151.1 million
    • 2 projects: New Building Resource Centers
  5. New Charlotte-Mecklenburg Main Library — $65.0 million

Other features of the Capital Improvement Plan include:

  • Discovery Place Nature Museum — $16 million
  • Public Safety Enhancements — $32.9 million
  • American Legion Memorial Stadium
